📜 History & Heritage of the Old Lutz School
🕰️ Origins & Early Years
Originally, Lutz’s first formal school was established around 1910 as a one-room wooden schoolhouse serving grades 1–8. However, after a hurricane destroyed the building in 1921, a temporary structure was used while plans for a permanent school were developed.
🧱 The 1927 Brick Schoolhouse
As the community grew, a larger solution was needed. Therefore, in 1927, the current Colonial Revival-style brick schoolhouse was constructed with four classrooms and an auditorium. Later, additional rooms were added upstairs. The building continued operating as a school for decades before it was closed in the mid-1970s when enrollment outgrew the space.
🏛️ Preservation & Recognition
Fortunately, the building was preserved rather than forgotten. In 1993, it was named one of Hillsborough County’s first official historic landmarks. Soon after, in 1996, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Since 1978, preservation and community access have been guided by the nonprofit Citizens for the Old Lutz School Building.
